Learning To Manage Stress

Everyone experiences a degree of stress – whether it’s at home, work or with our health, finances, relationships or something else. There’s no getting away from it – we all have lots to get done and never enough time to do it all.


Friday, February 4th 2011 is National Stress Down Day, organised by the Samaritans (http://www.stressdownday.org/) and is a timely reminder that we all need to actively take steps to ensure we maintain a healthy sense of balance and control.


A little stress can be

useful to keep us motivated and moving forward towards our goals. However, we need to take action or seek help when the worry and pressure are more than we can handle.

Some common signs of stress are:

  • Changes in eating patterns
  • Increased drinking/smoking
  • Sleep problems
  • Irritability
  • Crying
  • Headaches
  • Tiredness/low energy
  • Anxiety
  • Helplessness/isolation
  • Feeling low or bad about ourselves


There are many simple things you can do to improve how you manage the stress in your life. You could:

  • Reduce smoking and drinking levels
  • Eat healthily
  • Exercise regularly
  • Get enough sleep
  • Learn to relax
  • Talk to someone about it


You can learn to relax in many ways such as Yoga, Tai Chi or mediation. Hypnosis can also help you relax physically and mentally so you feel refreshed and ready to handle anything life throws at you.


The most important thing you can do now is recognise you need to take action and then do it whichever way works best for you.
